The Wandering Orchard

The Wandering Orchard relocated an underused community parklet from Wellard Train Station to Wellard Square, bringing tables, seating and fruit trees into the heart of the village. Led by the Wellard Village People Town Team with support from RAC’s Connecting Communities Fund, the project created a meeting place where community groups, local residents and visitors could gather, connect and support nearby businesses.
  • Secured a $7,000 RAC Connecting Communities Fund grant after the project received strong support from RAC member voting.
  • Identified a more active and visible location at the corner of The Strand and Runnymede Gate to bring the Wandering Orchard into the heart of Wellard Village.
  • Submitted approvals and licensing agreements with the Department of Communities, Peet and the City of Kwinana to use the land as a temporary community space.
  • Worked with local partners including Luntian Building Design & Solutions, BnL Earthworks, Peet and the City of Kwinana to prepare site plans, groundworks and relocation logistics.
  • Moved the fruit trees, soakwell tables, seating and fencing from the original site to the new location.
  • Prepared the site with earthworks, eco concrete, fertiliser, water and planting support to help the orchard settle into its new home.
  • Created a flexible meeting place for the Town Team, community groups, events and everyday use by residents and visitors.
