A concept plan and community co-design project for a key site on York's main street, involving a prototype public space installation to build community trust before engagement, resulting in a plan agreed by all parties and adopted by Council.
In 2022, TTM prepared the York CBD Revitalisation Plan for the Shire of York, which involved extensive engagement. In 2023, the Shire approached TTM regarding further engagement informed by this previous work, requiring a concept plan for a key site on the main street, Avon Terrace. This concept plan would need to involve community agreement, and agreement with the landowner, the York Co-Op.
- Following the 2022 York CBD Revitalisation Plan, the Shire engaged TTM in 2023 to develop a concept plan for a key site on Avon Terrace, requiring buy-in from both the community and landowner, the York Co-Op
- TTM identified community frustration over a perceived lack of action as a risk to the project's success, and decided to address this before moving into formal engagement
- To rebuild trust, TTM installed a prototype public space on Avon Terrace - featuring shade umbrellas, picnic tables, and potted trees - directly responding to what the community had previously said was missing from the main street
- On-site signage explained the trial, invited feedback on improvements, and introduced the concept plan engagement, including a QR code linking to an online survey
- The site also served as an information hub, promoting an upcoming walkshop and co-design workshop
- The prototype demonstrated tangible action in response to community input, which significantly eased frustration and built trust in the process
- Engagement on the concept plan was overwhelmingly positive, resulting in a well-received plan agreed by all parties and adopted by Council
