William Street Reimagined is a community-led urban greening project transforming one of Fremantle’s key civic streets into a cooler, greener and more welcoming place for locals, visitors and pollinators. Delivered by the City of Fremantle and FreoDOC Town Team, the project brought community members, local businesses, volunteers and City staff together to plant more than 450 native plants along William Street, helping improve biodiversity, urban cooling, street amenity and community wellbeing.
The William Street Reimagined project was brought to life through more than a year of planning, design, community engagement and hands-on collaboration.
Key steps included:
- Developing a community-led vision to reimagine William Street as a greener, safer and more people-friendly civic space.
- Building a strong project partnership between the City of Fremantle, FreoDOC Town Team, local businesses, volunteers and community members.
- Securing funding through Town Team Movement’s Streets Alive Grant Program, supporting the delivery of the urban greening works.
- Planning and designing the project with input from City officers, FreoDOC Town Team and the wider community.
- Preparing the street for planting through groundworks including de-paving, garden bed preparation, soil, mulch and reticulation.
- Planting more than 450 native plants along William Street, creating a greener environment that supports pollinators, biodiversity and urban cooling.
- Bringing the community together for a hands-on planting day, with local residents, businesses, volunteers and City staff helping transform the space.
- Creating a model for urban greening that demonstrates how civic streets can become more welcoming, climate-friendly and community-focused.
