Smart Street Guerrilla Gardening

The Smart Street Town Team is a group focused on bringing vibrancy to the Smart Street Mall.

The town team spent a few hours planting edibles, natives, succulents and perennials for colour and vibrancy in the planter boxes on the Mall. Plants were donated by members of the Mandurah Garden Club and Mandurah Community Gardens and Bunnings Mandurah. @Soils Aint Soils Mandurah donated the soil improver.

The Smart Street Town Team brought new colour and care to the Smart Street Mall by refreshing planter boxes with edibles, natives, succulents and perennials. The Doing showed how a small group of locals, supported by community donations, could quickly make a public space feel more vibrant, welcoming and loved.

Key steps included:

  • Identified the Smart Street Mall planter boxes as a visible space that could benefit from more colour, greenery and care.
  • Used a guerrilla gardening approach to show that simple planting can quickly improve the look and feel of a place.
  • Chose a mix of edibles, native plants, succulents and perennials to add variety, vibrancy and interest.
  • Focused on hardy and low-maintenance plants suited to the local environment.
  • Gathered donated plants from Mandurah Garden Club, Mandurah Community Gardens and Bunnings Mandurah.
  • Received donated soil improver from Soils Aint Soils Mandurah to help support healthy plant growth.
  • Spent a few hours as a Town Team planting together and refreshing the Mall’s planter boxes.
  • Created a small but visible improvement that helped signal community care, pride and ongoing activation in the Smart Street Mall.
