Creative Maylands Town Team's vision for Roxy Lane was to transform an underutilised laneway and carparking space into a community place where people gather, engage in activities together, and support local businesses.
In 2021 Creative Maylands brought local businesses, community groups and residents together to give unattractive Roxy Lane a makeover through The Roxy Revamp project, with a splash of colour, seating, and greening transforming it into a lively, welcoming place.

Activities on the Day
From October 2021 to November 2022, Creative Maylands Town Team held several community engagement sessions, including a co-design session onsite at Roxy Lane Theatre, to help with The Roxy Revamp planning and ensure the best outcomes.
Based on community and business feedback, the City of Bayswater's graphic designer designed a colour palette and series of icons that captured the essence of the area- cupcakes, coffee and croissants represent local cafes, plants are for the local community garden, and the bikes depict the local bike parks. The graphic designer also created a layout of the design on the laneway itself - a valuable in-kind contribution.
A local signwriter was then engaged to turn the images into a set of stencils, and traced these onto the laneway, ready for painting. With a few initial icons painted on the laneway by the signwriter to set the tone, community members were then invited to take part in the artwork installation.
The mural was painted in 72 hours by locals with help of the RAC WA staff as part of the RAC Community Volunteering program.
Garden beds and colourful benches were also installed. To make Roxy Lane safer and more attractive and suitable for events, it was lit up with energy efficient festoon lighting, which created a very different night time environment from the previously dim street lights.
