Pinking up the hood

Pinking Up the Hood is a joyful community greening project in Geraldton’s Beachlands neighbourhood, encouraging residents to plant pink and white everlasting flowers in their gardens and verges. Started by local residents who wanted to share the beauty of everlastings beyond their own front yards, the project aims to brighten the neighbourhood, create a more vibrant and happy place, and bring people together through simple, hands-on gardening.
  • Started with a local idea from a Beachlands resident who had been growing, harvesting and replanting everlasting flowers in their own garden for years.
  • Connected with Beachlands Community to help share the idea more widely and invite local people to get involved.
  • Put the call out to locals through Facebook to see who was interested in planting everlastings around the neighbourhood.
  • Gathered community interest, with around 50 people putting their hands up to be involved.
  • Held busy bee workshops where residents came together to sort seed heads, make origami seed packets and create seed bombs.
  • Made planting easy and accessible, choosing everlastings because they are simple to grow and rewarding for people of all gardening abilities, including children.
  • Shared seed packets with the community so locals could plant pink and white flowers in their own gardens, verges and neighbourhood spaces.
  • Created opportunities for connection, using small workshops as a way for neighbours to gather, talk and build a stronger sense of community.
  • Set the project up to continue, with hopes to plant everlastings every year and keep “pinking up” the neighbourhood.
