What happens when you ask local kids to bring some colour to a neglected park?
This was Create Forrestfield’s first big community project! The kids worked SO hard and absolutely smashed it. We’re incredibly proud of them and of this colourful little boost to our neighbourhood.
We asked children that lived on nearby roads and attended the nearby primary school if they wanted to paint the footpath at a local park. They were super excited and requested a rainbow path.
The path was cleaned and primed the week before. On the day we used tape to make geometric shapes then went through marking where each colour starts and finishes so we had a repeating rainbow path through the park. Once the paint was dry the tape was lifted to reveal the pattern, so satisfying!
It was a hot day and this took ALL day. Luckily we did have plenty of water and VWA had arranged snacks and lunch for volunteers and at any time volunteers could take a break and rest in the shade.
We could have pushed more for the kids to wear hats and sunscreen and, for an event like this, next time strongly recommend clothing that covers shoulders to prevent sunburn.
We needed more tape than we expected and it took longer than we expected!
Wear gloves for painting the sealer with the large paint rollers to prevent blisters.
All positive feedback on the results so far!
Some locals that passed by on the day wanted more promotion to be aware of the event but we had wanted to keep this one small as it was our first. There was signage at the park for a week prior advising what we would be doing and a letterbox drop to the streets it was on.
All the people who passed by on the day loved it.
