Box City came to life as a simple, low-cost activity that turned everyday cardboard boxes into a playful temporary space for children and families. By using recycled materials and an open community setting, the Doing created an easy way for kids to build, imagine and play while parents had the chance to relax, chat and connect.

Key steps included:

• Identified Box City as a quick, affordable and family-friendly activity that could bring people together.
• Collected empty cardboard boxes from local shops, department stores, residents and community members.
• Used larger boxes, such as whitegoods boxes, to create more exciting structures and play opportunities.
• Prepared the boxes with gaffer tape so they were ready for children to build with and explore.
• Chose an open space such as a park, street verge or car park where families could safely gather.
• Set up the cardboard boxes as a temporary play environment that encouraged imagination, movement and collaboration.
• Added simple extras such as drinks, music or food options to make the space welcoming for adults as well as children.
• Created an informal community activity where kids could stay engaged while parents relaxed and connected with others.
