One of the actions of the very first town team was the Beaufort Street Festival, which was WA’s biggest one day street event. It attracted up to 150,000 people to enjoy music, arts, food and street culture along Beaufort Street in Highgate and Mount Lawley. The Festival really put Beaufort Street on the map and led to new businesses opening along the strip. The Network helped many community groups and Town Teams to get started and create their own events in future years.
The Beaufort Street Festival was brought to life through strong collaboration between the Beaufort Street Network, local governments, businesses, artists, performers and hundreds of community volunteers. As one of the first major initiatives of the Town Team movement, the festival transformed Beaufort Street into a vibrant celebration of music, arts, food and street culture, attracting up to 150,000 visitors and helping revitalise the Highgate and Mount Lawley precincts. Careful planning, stakeholder engagement and detailed event management processes ensured the festival was safe, inclusive and accessible while creating a lively and memorable experience for the community.
Key steps included:
- Developing a detailed Event Management Plan covering site operations, accessibility, safety, noise and traffic management
- Working closely with the City of Stirling, City of Vincent, emergency services, transport providers and local businesses to coordinate approvals and logistics
- Engaging artists, performers, stallholders, sponsors and community groups to create a diverse and vibrant festival program
- Designing the event site to support crowd flow, accessibility, public transport access and safe entry and exit points
- Coordinating volunteers, contractors and production teams for event operations, bump-in and bump-out
- Delivering a strong marketing and PR campaign through media, social media, print and community partnerships
- Creating welcoming public spaces that encouraged people to connect, support local businesses and experience Beaufort Street in a new way
- Building long-term momentum for placemaking and inspiring other Town Teams and community groups to deliver their own local events and activations
