Research into the road safety experiences, attitudes, behaviours and concerns of children, parents and community in Bassendean. Two workshops will be held, one for children aged 0-6 and one for children aged 7-15, to gather insights and co-design street calming solutions. The outcomes and recommendations will summarised into a report and shared with the Local Government and community for further development. To be decided after consultation with local children. These will likely be streets around primary schools or playgrounds where children frequent - or a group who want to begin having streets parties regularly.
The Bassendean Play Street project was developed through community-led research and collaboration focused on creating safer, more connected neighbourhoods for children and families. Workshops with local children, parents and community members were used to gather insights into road safety concerns and co-design street calming ideas for areas around schools, playgrounds and residential streets. By working closely with neighbours, encouraging local participation and exploring temporary play street activations, the project helped build community connection while developing practical recommendations to share with Local Government for future implementation.

How to Set up a Play Street

1 / 8
- We mobilised hundreds of people with one purpose and that is to value chidlren and their right to street play.
- Many adults wanted us to do it again and immediately understood the purpose. The children felt empowered to run their own stalls and safe knowing they were among community and adults who cared for them.
- Turned street into a party!
- We have created an easy to follow template for the street parties. We hope this is adopted into the local government Street Play Policy.
Changes in attitudes and behaviours:
Its difficult to gauge if people are slowing down or if more children feel confident to play in the streets in this early stage of the project. However, during the event, it was clear that adults understood the purpose of allowing children to play safely in the streets.
