Applecross Play Street

Play Streets is a movement for Australians to reclaim their quiet residential streets as places for neighbours of all ages to connect and play, to create stronger and healthier communities. Applecross locals informally closed down a quiet residential street for 3 hours, turning it into a place to meet, relax and play.

Applecross locals brought Play Streets to life by transforming a quiet residential street into a temporary shared space for neighbours to meet, relax and play. The idea started small, using the street as an everyday community asset and creating a simple opportunity for people of all ages to connect close to home.

Key steps included:

  • Identified a quiet residential street that could safely become a temporary place for people, play and connection.
  • Used the Play Streets model as inspiration for reclaiming local streets as shared community spaces.
  • Spoke with neighbours about the idea and invited them to be part of shaping the event.
  • Explored whether local government support, funding or in-kind resources could help bring the activity to life.
  • Invited nearby residents through simple local promotion such as door knocking, flyers and word of mouth.
  • Kept the first event small and informal to test the idea and make participation feel easy.
  • Temporarily closed the street for three hours, creating space for neighbours of all ages to gather, play, relax and build local connections.
